I came across Beta dependency? by icarusancalion the other day, and I found it really interesting. I liked how the roles of beta and cheerleader seemed to have merged in eir experience, and the idea of having someone there to bounce ideas off of from the beginning is interesting.

Have any of y'all had a beta from the second you started with ideas for a work, and if so, how did it work for you? Do you see betas as more towards the editor side of the scale, or the cheerleader + editor role that icarusancalion mentions? Thoughts?

Mo =/= A Great BB Cheerleader

I'm at that point in my BB where the stage has been set, and there are tons of different paths that this story could take (even within the confines of the prompt that I'm working from). So, of course, the blank page is terrifying me. *nods*

Usually, taking my husky, Mo, out for a long walk helps to clear my head and solve plot problems. But this isn't so much a plot problem as it is a moment of plot indecision. And, unfortunately, it occurs to me that Mo can't actually talk these things out with me. I tried staring down Bowser, my other dog, for advice, but he seems similarly constrained.

Curses! I knew I should've adopted a parrot. XD

MRIs & The Familiar Pain Of Writing

Got my MRI over with. Of course, I now have to wait over a month to find out the results. Figures. Fingers crossed that it's a normal abnormality, though. The last thing I want is another drug, one that even the doc thinks might end up fucking with my system.

That said, the MRI itself was kinda fun. It was like an hour and a half meditation session where my monkey brain was allowed to go wild, featuring a bed of pillows instead of circulation-crushing floor.

Not that all of that thinking time really helped with my current plot predicament.

Then again, if my writing had no dilemnas, then I'd be dreaming, now wouldn't I? After all, writing is a giant process of getting stuck and unstuck. I've even started bemoaning my current plot dilemnas to my wife, and then getting huffy when she's not so sympathetic that her heart's visibly bleeding in front of me.

Ah, writing. How I've missed you (I think).

fannish5's Question: Five Reasons I Love HP Fandom

This week's question is a really personal one, and it really goes to the core of a lot of both my personal and my fannish life (because of that, I'm actually going to be turning off the comments to this post). I have such a big bundle of HP love and such a tangled and interwoven relationship with it that it's really hard for me to separate out just five reasons that this series and fandom means the world to me.

This is particularly true because I was very lucky with my early HP experiences. I mean, I totally recognize that I could've been surrounded by jerks and had things go differently, and yeah, sometimes I still end up running into so much rage in the fandom that I have flames along the side of my face. But then I take a break and think back to the moments that I'm about to share, and I know that HP will always have its very own place in my heart.

((While I'm chatting, I thought I'd mention that I totally realize the lol factor of using a LotS icon on my HP love!post. But since it's my 'reading' icon, I figured it would be alright, anyways.))

Help: Cheap Things To Do In Chicago

My wife and I are going to Chicago this Saturday and Sunday for her birthday, because my SiL got us tickets to see the Distant Worlds concert. I'm pretty geeked about it, but my wife is freaking out because we're pretty broke. We're going to stay with her cousin (I've never met her, but she sounds nice), but she's still freaking out about food and entertainment.

So I was wondering if any of y'all could help me with some ideas. I want to make it a fun and special trip for her, even though our budget is pretty slim. Do any of y'all know of any fun and cheap things to do in Chicago on the weekend?

I was thinking of doing a brunch picnic by the lake on Sunday, and the concert is at 2pm on Sunday, but beyond that I'm kinda clueless. Help!

An AO3 Question

Lately I've been reading and bookmarking a lot of fics, since my Summer of Reading starts up soon and I want to be prepared. The problem is that I can't seem to download anything from AO3, and haven't been able to for almost two months.

Do y'all know what's going on with AO3's downloading option?

At first I tried waiting it out, because I thought that maybe it was just me (similar to how my netbook hates facebook and youtube). But I've seen other people on my flist notice the same problem, and waiting hasn't helped. I tried looking around the few AO3 comms and news places that I know about, but I haven't managed to find anything relevent.

It's really frustrating, because one of the main reasons I go to AO3 over LJ/DW/other archives is because the downloading option makes it easier to take fics along with me instead of being stuck at the computer. I mean, sure, I can still manage to save fics to my ereader through different means, but it takes longer and I'd prefer to be able to avoid the tedium. So, erm, help?

As a head's up, my internet has been down since Saturday, and we can't figure out why. It might be down for awhile longer, so it'll probably take me a bit to respond to posts/comments. 16. What are you glad you did but haven't really had a chance to post about?

I joined a gym and have been jogging again, which is nice. I'm using the treadmill so that I can read on my e-reader while exercising. Add my ear plugs to the equation and things are awesome.

I also bought a reclining love seat to replace our broken futon. It arrives tomorrow, and I'm super excited. Abby's had that futon for nine years, and we've had it for as long as we've been together. It's nice to get something else, and something that's sort of a symbol of the mixing of our lives - it has the modern feel that Abby likes, and the reclining option that I like/need (my circulation sucks).

3W4DW Meme: Days 14 & 15

14. Did you have a gateway fandom? Still in it? Why or why not? Is there a community for it on DW? (AKA: Morgan's Fannish History, Part 9003)

Hmmm, this is a hard one. I've been a fangirl my whole life, so I can't honestly remember any single fandom that sparked it all. For as long as I remember my existence, I remember fandom moments: my best friend and I created Mario-verse Mary Sue stories when I was four; I dreamed desperately of being in the Star Wars universe when I was five; I was writing fan fiction for a computer game I played when I was six (I think my mom still has one of them in her memory box); I was creating Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen mysteries with my friends when I was in second grade. Fandom, and the fangirl mindset, are as much a part of me as my hands and toes.

It honestly just made sense for me to participate in online fandom as soon as I learned how to use the internet. My first online fandom was Popslash. To be a bit more specific, it was Boy Band RPF, focusing on *NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, and 98*. I'm no longer into those specific fandoms, but RPF in general is still something I read and enjoy. Though I'm not sure if DW has any communities for RPF, as I tend to only read it lately when I go out hunting for it (though that may change, as I've suddenly discovered this hankering for more of it).

Three Weeks For Dreamwidth Content

- Second Annual Femslash Mini Meta Fest: This has produced some awesome meta, and has some amazing prompts that I would love to see filled out ('Where's the Femslash Little Black Dress?', 'Posting: Where femslash writers post/why/where femslash writers don't post/why (prompted by observances that there is not a ton of femslash on Ao3)', etc).

- 8 Hypotheses for why f/f stories are more conservative than other types of fanfic: This was written for the Second Annual Femslash Mini Meta Fest, linked above. It's very accurate, and I can see that two of the points (2 & 7) pop up in my own subconcious whenever I settle down to write femslash.

- If This Isn't a Dream... (Leverage, Parker/Sophie, PG): This one is technically on LJ, but it was written after a series of comments were made in response to the '8 Hypotheses for why f/f stories are more conservative...' post, so I'm counting it in the 3W4DW section. It's a wonderful wingfic, with everyone's characterizations being dead-on.

I only have one, and it's casefic. There's not really an epic story behind it. It was on my LJ interest list, and so it came over here. I haven't removed it because I do really love casefic, and who knows, maybe eventually someone else will list it as an interest, too. :)

7. What is your favorite community on Dreamwidth?

Wow, it's hard to pick just one, because there are so many awesome communities on DW.

Even though I've never posted there myself, I guess I'd say that my favorite community is fucking_meds. I check it whenever I develop a side effect to see if it's a common one, or if it might be something else that's wrong. I also love that it gives people a place to complain about their medications without ableist assholes spouting off.

8. What community do you wish was more active?

so_sue_me. I'd particularly love to see more femslash posted. :)

3W4DW Meme: Days 6 -- Disability Accomodations

6. What do you wish people who read your journal knew about you?

There are a lot of things people who read my journal should know about me. I'm queer, female, a feminist, fat, same-sex married, pagan, vegan, a person with disabilities (PWD), and a Hufflepuff. Any of those things could fill hundreds of posts about what they mean to me. But because today is Blogging Against Disablism Day, I'm going to focus on the fact that I'm disabled.

Let me get started by listing my disabilities. I have depression, anxiety, central auditory processing disorder, insomnia, PTSD, and a bad heart. Sometimes one disability is more irritating than another, and sometimes they all work together to fuck me over. Sometimes I have plenty of energy, and sometimes I barely have enough spoons to keep my eyes open. Normally my spoon level is somewhere in between, usually on the lower level of functioning.

Because of my disabilities, there are some simple accommodations that you need to make when interacting with me (and posting in general, since many of these benefit all PWD). Most of them aren't huge things, but they are vital to having a good relationship with me.

5. How about [telling us what you do] when you're not on the computer?

I watch a lot of television and read. Now that I have Netflix, I'm trying to catch up on all of the awesome shows that were big in fandom, but that I couldn't enjoy when they aired b/c I didn't have cable or internet. And now that I have my e-reader I'm working to catch up on all of the epic fic that I missed out on because my laptop made it harder for me to focus on longform stories.

Occassionally I'll play video games. I have a Wii and a PS2, so I play a lot of games on those. They're really expensive though (even if PS2 & GC game prices have come down dramatically), so I don't have a whole lot of them. Currently I'm digging playing DDR, Just Dance 2, Zumba, and Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. :D

Oh, and I'm a paper journaling geek. I buy fancy pens for it, and am pleased to have one for almost every mood (I even have aromatherapy pens). I also have a lot of stickers, and am always looking for more. When Abs and I go to the craft store, I always get lost in the scrapbooking and journaling section, lols. I use the journals and accoutrements for writing fic longhand, too, if I feel like it. They can really help to set the mood, particularly if I'm just playing around with a piece to see where it'll go.

3W4DW Meme: Days 3 & 4

3. Do you crosspost? Why or why not?

It depends. I usually crosspost my entries, for two main reasons. One reason I crosspost is to ensure that my LJ flist can keep up. The second reason is to make sure that my LJ doesn't appear abandoned. I need to show that I'm active in order to get into some of the communities that I want (comms are pretty much the only thing I use LJ for, anymore), which means that crossposting is pretty much my only option.

That said, sometimes I don't crosspost extremely personal entries. I just don't have that sort of trust in LJ after the past few staff/feature kerfuffles.

4. What do you do online when you're not on DW?

Check my communities on LJ, e-mail friends and family, play Farmville, and read fic/stories not hosted on DW. Sometimes I read the message boards at a variety of webfic places, too. I'll also research if I'm writing, or check in with some writing boards (particularly during NaNo time). Yeah, not incredibly interesting.
